Quaker Haven needs your Help! Amongst numerous other things, we would greatly appreciate some volunteers to help us in some grounds keeping ventures. From staining a cottage deck to helping to remodel Friendship Lodge to resurfacing our tennis court. All are welcome! If enough people volunteer for the day we will gladly make and serve lunch for you!
The Tennis Court is behind Friendship Lodge and has until recently been under the shade of five conifer trees for multiple decades where it has been rained down upon by sap and left to mildew from the shade. It is in need of a fresh coat of surfacing. The court is a sand-filled, non-slip, 100% acrylic All Weather coating.
The remodel of Friendship Lodge is a great undertaking. As of November 2011 Quaker Haven has raised $110, 000 of its $145,000 goal, laid all five of the new floors, and built the shells of four new rooms. If we are to be finished by Memorial Day 2012 then we will need some help! We will tear out the existing walls one at a time after New Year’s and work inside during the Indiana Winter and Spring. We will need electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and every other able body!
Most everyone is familiar with the standard rectangular picnic table. Ours are falling apart and weathered. Quaker Haven has decided to be different and have hexagonal picnic tables which allow people to sit in a ‘circle’ and address people directly. We have a blueprint, plenty of hammers, and a bunch of nails; what we need is you!
Like to garden? Quaker Haven has multiples gardens in disrepair in need of a green thumb and loving hand, or lots of motivated individuals! Red Cottage has the largest garden and is also the one in most need. Felix Cottage also has a small garden and so does Oak Haven Lodge.
In the near future Quaker Haven will be offering a bird watching program but we can’t do that without feeders and a shelter to watch them from. We could use some help by way of the donation of birdfeeders, and some help to build our shelter.
